47,000 Civilians Facing Death and Torture Inside Militia Detention Centers, Rights Group Says
The Mashad Human Rights Observatory said more than 47,000 civilian detainees are being held by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia under harsh conditions inside detention facilities away from the eyes of the world.
Mashad said the detainees are suffering from hunger, disease, and torture, describing them as exhausted bodies and souls weighed down by years of fear and waiting in what it called a humanitarian tragedy beyond description.
The group added that the continued detention of civilians and their exposure to such inhumane conditions constitute a grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights principles, calling for urgent action to save the victims and guarantee their freedom and dignity.
It further stressed that the detainees “are not merely numbers in statistics, but human beings with names, families, and dreams awaiting freedom and justice.”
