UN Rights Chief: Militia Drone Strikes Kill 880 Civilians in Four Months

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Monday condemned the growing use of drones in Sudan, which he said have killed 880 civilians over four months, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia continue drone attacks on civilian infrastructure, cities, and populated areas.

In a statement, Türk said the UN Human Rights Office in Sudan had documented that drone strikes accounted for 880 civilian deaths, representing more than 80% of all civilian fatalities linked to the conflict between January and April 2026.

He said drones have become the leading cause of civilian deaths and strongly condemned their increasing use, warning of an escalation and widening of violence in the coming weeks that could lead to further displacement and disruption of critical humanitarian aid delivery.

Türk called for strict measures to prevent the transfer of weapons, including increasingly advanced armed drones.

He added that drone attacks against civilians and civilian objects would only worsen the situation if they continue under conditions of complete impunity, warning that such violence is increasingly being normalised as a tactic used by both sides in the conflict.
