Attempted Abduction of Three Sudanese Refugee Women in Ethiopia

Three Sudanese refugee women were subjected to an attempted armed abduction on Monday morning inside the Aftit refugee camp in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.

Refugees told Radio Dabanga that the incident occurred at around 6:00–7:00 a.m., when a group of women headed to the outskirts of the camp to collect firewood. They were reportedly lured by armed individuals who claimed there was firewood nearby, only to be confronted with an attempted assault and abduction at gunpoint.

They added that the women resisted the attackers and engaged with them, while others raised alarm cries, prompting nearby young men to intervene. The interveners reportedly used stones to confront the assailants.

According to the accounts, the attackers fired shots to intimidate those intervening before fleeing the scene as resistance intensified, after beating the women and threatening to return.
