Migrants Boat Sinks off Libyan Coast; Dozens Missing Including Sudanese Nationals

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced that at least eight people were killed and 31 others remain missing after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Tobruk.

The agency said rescue teams managed to recover four survivors who had spent more than five days at sea under harsh weather conditions, noting that search operations are continuing despite difficult maritime conditions.

According to available information, the vessel was carrying migrants from Sudan, Somalia, and Egypt, including women and children, and was en route to the Greek island of Crete.

The IOM stressed that the incident highlights the growing dangers faced by migrants crossing the Mediterranean, calling for strengthened search-and-rescue capacities and the establishment of safe and regulated migration pathways to reduce fatalities.

The organization’s reports indicate a rise in irregular migration attempts from Sudan since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict, amid worsening security and humanitarian conditions that have contributed to an increase in deaths and missing persons during sea crossings.
