Death Toll Rises After Mine Collapse in Eastern Sudan, Dozens Trapped Under Rubble
The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company said on Wednesday that seven miners were killed and six others injured, according to preliminary figures, following the collapse of a traditional mining shaft at the “Keleti” mine in the Qanab and Olieb locality in Red Sea State, while dozens remain trapped under the rubble.
The company stated that civil defense teams have been continuing search and rescue operations at the collapse site since the incident occurred on Tuesday.
It added that its field teams have been stationed at the site since the first moments of the incident, coordinating with the relevant authorities to transfer the injured to Port Sudan for necessary medical treatment.
According to sources who spoke to Sudan Tribune, the situation at the affected mine is extremely difficult, amid a severe shortage of ambulances and a scarcity of medicines—conditions that require urgent and immediate intervention.
The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company renewed its appeal to all traditional miners to strictly adhere to occupational safety requirements and standards, and to exercise the highest levels of caution during mining operations, in order to preserve lives and reduce risks associated with mining activities.
The company affirmed the continuation of efforts to regulate the traditional mining sector and strengthen a safe working environment, in a way that contributes to protecting workers and reducing accidents.
