AIDS as a Weapon: Militia Elements Spread “Silent Death” Among Rape Survivors
AIDS as a Weapon: Militia Elements Spread “Silent Death” Among Rape SurvivorsMedical sources in the town of Tawila in North Darfur State have reported confirmed cases of infection with HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases among women and girls who fled the horrors of fighting in El-Fashir.
Medical sources told Darfur24 that the town’s hospital had received several patients infected with the virus, the overwhelming majority of them women who were subjected to severe sexual violations during their displacement journey or amid the violence that engulfed El-Fashir.
The problem, sources said, has not been limited to HIV/AIDS. It has also extended to a worrying spread of Hepatitis and other sexually transmitted infections, resulting from systematic sexual assaults or from the absence of adequate medical oversight during blood transfusions and childbirth carried out under unsafe conditions.
