United Nations Announces Arrival of Assessment Mission in El-Fashir

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced the arrival of an assessment mission in El-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur state in western Sudan.
According to OCHA, the mission is expected to assess violations suffered by civilians and the overall humanitarian situation, including the destruction of markets and water sources, as well as attacks on the premises of UN agencies and humanitarian organizations.
In a statement, OCHA said the assessment team reached El-Fashir following extensive humanitarian negotiations, marking the first mission to access the city after months of intense fighting, siege conditions, and widespread violations against civilians and humanitarian workers.
The office added that hundreds of thousands of civilians have been forced to flee El-Fashir and surrounding areas since the outbreak of the conflict.
