AU Rejects Parallel Government in Sudan
Prime Minister Kamil Idris, head of Sudan’s delegation, met with Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
The AU Chairperson affirmed the Union’s readiness to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of his mission.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister stated that the decision to suspend Sudan’s membership in the African Union was illegal, describing it as unjust toward a founding member of the Union. He stressed that the current government is a civilian technocratic government, noting that achieving peace is the top priority for the Government of Hope.
He called for lifting the suspension of Sudan’s membership in the Union in order to enhance the chances for peace within the framework of African solutions to African problems. He also welcomed all initiatives that support peace and stability in Sudan.
For his part, the AU Chairperson reiterated the Union’s support for Sudan in the upcoming stage to strengthen security and stability and to restore its natural place among the AU active member states.
He praised Dr. Kamil Idris personally, describing him as a safety valve for Sudan’s future, expressing his sympathy for the suffering of the Sudanese people, known for their generosity and humanity, voicing confidence that Sudan will soon return stronger than before through the efforts of its people.
Meanwhile, the AU Chairperson emphasized the AU’s support for Sudan in the humanitarian field, making clear that the AU rejected the formation of any parallel government and called on other states not to recognize it, in order to avoid a repeat of the Libyan scenario.
He also noted that the AU’s call for a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue aims to broaden political participation and achieve peace and stability in the country.
