White Nile floods sweep across Al-Gezira Aba, displacing thousands
The White Nile floods have swamped several residential areas in Al-Gezira Aba and neighboring villages, displacing thousands of residents, amid fears that the main drinking water station in the area will be devastated.
The Minister of Infrastructure in White Nile State, Al-Tayib Mohamed Al-Hassan, underscored that the militia’s closure of the Jebel Awliya Dam contributed to the rise in the water level of the White Nile, which led to the accumulation of water behind the dam, and increased the severity of the floods in the area.
Eyewitnesses and local residents told Sudan Tribune that since last Saturday, and for the fourth consecutive day, the flood waters have inundated the areas of Al-Rahmaniya and the neighborhoods of Al-Gezira Aba, in addition to the surrounding villages, resulting in the collapse of hundreds of homes and the destruction of families’ property, in addition to the loss of many livestock due to the torrential waters.
