Water crisis worsens humanitarian situation in El-Fashir

El-Fashir – Sudan Echoes

The humanitarian situation in El-Fashir, capital of North Darfur, has worsened after most water sources went out of service following the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) takeover of the city’s main water and electricity station.

Several residents told Darfur 24 that the city is experiencing an unprecedented water crisis, with the price of a barrel reaching 30,000 pounds and water being completely unavailable in most parts of the city, exacerbating the suffering of civilians already facing hunger and shelling.

Yahya Ibrahim, a water tanker owner, told Darfur 24 that the scarcity of water and rising prices are due to the shutdown of most private wells in the city.

The General Directorate of Urban Water confirmed that the militia’s targeting of infrastructure, including water sources, and its control over the main water and electricity station has worsened the water crisis in El-Fashir.

The Director of the General Directorate of Urban Water, Khalid Ishag, told Darfur 24 that “water supply in the city has completely stopped, forcing residents to rely on private wells, but unfortunately these too have begun to go out of service as the militia advances into some neighborhoods.”
