Washington to Host Quartet Meeting on Sudan Next Wednesday

Washington, the US capital, is to host a meeting of the Quartet on Sudan next Wednesday, with the foreign ministers of the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in attendance.

Senior diplomatic sources denied to Al-Shorouk reports circulating about the Quartet’s current expansion and the participation of Qatar and Britain.

The sources explained that this matter must first be subject to consultation among the Quartet member states, noting that the Quartet’s current goal is to avoid overwhelming the scene by involving a large number of countries and to limit itself to those currently concerned with the Sudanese crisis.

The sources confirmed that the upcoming Washington meeting aims to discuss the situation in Sudan and explore ways to resolve the crisis and end the war, as well as to halt all foreign interference in Sudan, in preparation for serious negotiations to end the war that erupted more than two years ago.

Diplomatic sources said the meeting would issue a joint statement outlining the four countries’ vision for resolving the crisis in Sudan, particularly with regard to a ceasefire, launching a political process to end the intense tension between all parties, halting foreign interference, and focusing on the humanitarian aspect and delivering aid to affected areas. The statement is to also underscore the unity and integrity of Sudanese territory, the sovereignty of the state, and the preservation of the unity of its institutions.
