UN Secretary-General Rejects Any Government in Sudan Other Than Al-Burhan’s

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a ceasefire in Sudan and a peaceful settlement to end the ongoing conflict.

Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris held talks with Secretary-General Guterres, during which the two sides discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire.

In a statement, the United Nations said that Guterres expressed to Prime Minister Idris his deep concern over the protracted conflict in Sudan, stressing the urgent need for a comprehensive political process that leads to a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, also reviewed the worsening humanitarian situation in Darfur—particularly in El-Fashir, North Darfur State—as well as in the Kordofan region.

According to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the talks between Prime Minister Idris and Secretary-General Guterres also addressed ways to strengthen cooperation and partnership between Sudan and the United Nations, especially in supporting peace and stability, implementing sustainable development programs, and advancing UN projects in education, health, security, and economic development, in addition to empowering women and enhancing their role in sustainable peacebuilding.

The United Nations further emphasized its commitment to supporting Sudanese state institutions and rejected any attempts to undermine legitimacy or establish parallel governments.
