UN: Jeopardy of Genocide by Al-Dagalo Militia in Sudan is ‘Very High’
A senior UN official warned on Monday that the risk of genocide in Sudan’s devastating war remains “very high,” amid continued ethnically motivated attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
UN Under-Secretary-General and Acting Special Adviser to Secretary-General António Guterres on the Prevention of Genocide, Virginia Gamba, said the militia has committed gross human rights violations.
She added, before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, that “what concerns my mandate is the ongoing attacks targeting specific ethnic groups, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.”
She emphasized that the RSF and allied Arab armed militias “continue to launch ethnically motivated attacks against the Zaghawa, Masalit, and Fur tribes.”
Gamba warned that “the jeopardy of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Sudan remains very high.”
