UAE Continues Detention of Prominent Sudanese Politician for Over a Year
The Sudanese National Alliance Party on Wednesday strongly condemned the continued detention of its former Deputy Chairman and Central Council member, Mohamed Farouk, by authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a statement, the party said Farouk has been held for more than a year without clear charges or trial, describing the situation as a “blatant violation of basic principles of justice, the rule of law, and human rights.”
The statement added that repeated inquiries through multiple channels have been met with silence, raising concerns over the arbitrary nature of the detention. The party emphasized that holding Farouk without legal grounds or formal judicial proceedings constitutes a serious precedent inconsistent with international charters, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees the right to freedom and a fair trial.
The National Alliance called for Farouk to be brought before a fair and public trial with full legal guarantees or released immediately. It urged political forces, civil society, and human rights organizations to support the case, stressing that silence on such violations encourages their continuation and undermines justice and human dignity. The party also called on the international community and regional actors to pressure for an end to the “unjustified” detention.
