The Sudan’s Foreign Ministry warns EU against equating the army with rebel militias

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its complete rejection of the basis upon which the European Union (EU) Council’s decision to impose restrictive measures against a number of Sudanese individuals and institutions was based.

The Ministry asserted that the decision lacked justice and professionalism, and considered it an unfair measure that equates the Sudanese Armed Forces with “outlawed rebel armed groups.”

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that this EU approach is not based on fair legal standards. It expressed deep regret over the timing of the European decision, particularly as it came at a time when the relationship between Sudan and the European Union is witnessing a new phase of positive engagement and diplomatic liaise. It considered this step to undermine the chances of building on previous understandings between the two sides.

The Ministry warned that such decisions could create political and security complications on the ground, noting that constructive engagement and mutual understanding represent the shortest path to achieving stability and peace in the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the European Union to adopt a more balanced approach that takes into account the complex national situation, urging it not to fall into the trap of equating legitimate state institutions with outlawed militias, given the dangerous impact this would have on the political and security situation in Sudan.
