Sudanese Refugee Commission Official Arrested on Corruption Charges

Authorities in Portsudan have arrested Awad Ali Midan, the Director of the Executive Office at the Sudanese Refugee Commission.

Official documents and letters published by Sudan Tribune last March revealed major violations at the Sudanese Refugee Commission, including violations of dismissal, appointment, and assignment policies, as well as violations of administrative regulations and the Civil Service Law following the April 15 War.

Government sources told Sudan Tribune that the prosecution filed a suit against the official at the Refugee Commission on charges of corruption and identity theft, numbered 994 under Article 93 of the Penal Code, at the Porsudan Airport Police Station.

An employee at the Commission confirmed Midan’s arrest on Saturday and his detention.

He stated that authorities have opened a broad investigation into the violations at the Refugee Commission.

The employee expected that the investigation would include an official at a sovereign ministry accused of violating the law by reappointing a dismissed employee from the Refugee Commission to a senior position.

In a previous interview with Sudan Tribune, employees accused the current Executive Director of leaking files to the public, which led to his dismissal by a decision from the former commissioner, before he was reinstated by a decision from the Minister of Interior and the current acting commissioner, Mohamed Al-Tohami.
