Sudanese Minister of Agriculture during a harvest celebration: Sudan will not starve
Federal Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Omar Abu Bakr Al-Bushra, launched the national harvest celebration from the Kalhot Agricultural Project in Kassala Locality, amidst great joy of farmers.
When addressing the celebration, Dr. Al-Bushra praised all partners from national and foreign organizations and companies for their support for agricultural activities in the state, thanking, specifically, the farmers of the Kalhot Agricultural Project and the increase in the cultivated area this season, amounted to 25,000 acres compared to 2,000 and 500 acres for the previous season.
The Minister referred to the Ministry’s strategy to move from traditional to modern agriculture, which represents one of the key problems in the country. He stressed the Ministry’s concern with providing improved seeds to farmers, in addition to its interest in technology transfer, extension centers and commitment to technical packages, revealing that the Ministry distributed more than 30,000 tons of seeds, 20,000 tons of which were from the FAO, which contributed to increasing the cultivated areas for the current season.
Dr. Al-Bushra added that the indicative cultivated area this year amounted to 170 million acres, including 4,000 acres in Kassala State, with ample areas of sorghum.
Dr. Al-Bushra revealed that the areas that were identified and cultivated amounted to 30 million acres, including 17 million for sorghum, in addition to other areas that were cultivated in a number of states. The Federal Minister of Agriculture pointed to the success of cultivating various crops in Sudan due to the climatic diversity, noting the phenomenon of (nano) that affected a number of countries, some of which were affected by drought, but in Sudan it led to an increase in rainfall rates, which led to the cultivation of rain-fed irrigated projects. The minister reviewed the efforts that led to the success of the current agricultural season.
Dr. Al-Bushra added that those who badly intended openness of Sudan borders were not honest, and those who say that Sudan will starve are stubborn
Federal Minister of Agriculture announced the provision of more than 4,000 tons of sorghum for the strategic reserve, noting at the same time that there are surrounding countries that feed from Sudan, expressing no regret over the percentage that goes to neighboring countries.
