Sudan Ranks First in Arab and African Internet Shutdown Losses
A report issued by the Top 10 VPN website showed that Sudan ranked first in the Arab world and African continent, and third globally, in the list of countries with the most losses due to government internet shutdowns in 2024.
The report, a copy of which was obtained by Al-Mal, estimated Sudan’s losses from internet shutdowns in 2024 at approximately $1.12 billion, resulting from the denial of service to 23.4 million people for up to 12,700 hours.
The report indicated that governments worldwide cut off internet services due to various tensions, costing them approximately $7.7 billion last year, compared to $9.1 billion in 2023, a decrease of 15.4%.
Pakistan Tops the List
Pakistan topped the list with losses reaching $1.62 billion, while Myanmar came in second with $1.58 billion, and Sudan third with $1.12 billion.
Venezuela ranked fourth with a loss of $1.1 billion, while Bangladesh ranked fifth with $796.6 million.
India ranked sixth with $332.9 million, after the internet was cut off for nearly 67.7 million people for 2,900 hours.
Iraq ranked seventh with losses of $229.4 million, followed by Ethiopia with $211.2 million, which saw outages lasting 4,700 hours for nearly 3.3 million people.
Turkey ranked ninth with economic losses of $137 million, while Azerbaijan ranked tenth with $81.4 million.

The report indicated that in addition to Sudan and Iraq, five other Arab countries made the list.
