Sudan Faces Threat of Devastating Floods from Renaissance Dam
Cairo University water resources and geology expert, Dr. Abbas Sharaki, warned of potential catastrophic floods in Sudan and Egypt due to the full reservoir of Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam. He noted that, with the dam currently filled and turbines inactive, rising water levels from the upcoming June rainy season could replicate last year’s flooding.
Dr. Sharaki highlighted past mismanagement, where incomplete turbine operation and lack of gradual discharge led to severe flooding in September 2025, and questioned whether the same mistakes could recur this year.
