SJU: Unknown Fate of Al-Jazeera Correspondent Abducted in El-Fashir
The Sudanese Journalists Union (SJU) announced that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had abducted journalist Muammar Ibrahim in the city of El-Fashir.
In a statement received by Sudanese Echoes, the SJU said that the militia continues to commit crimes against civilians and target journalists, perpetrating heinous violations against them.
The SJU revealed that the militia had kidnapped the Al-Jazeera Mubasher correspondent in El-Fashir.
It confirmed that the fate of Muammar remains unknown as of the time of the statement’s release, after he was last seen surrounded by RSF members during the moment of his abduction.
The SJU indicated that reports had emerged suggesting that he was subjected to torture by his captors.
The Sudanese Journalists Union affirmed its full solidarity with colleague Muammar and its support for all journalists who have been subjected to brutal violations during the war in the Darfur states.
It called on all international, regional, and press and human rights organizations to work together to secure Muammar’s release and lift the injustice inflicted upon him.
The SJU held the criminal and terrorist RSF fully responsible for his life and safety.
It stated that the crime of abducting journalist Muammar Ibrahim is part of a systematic pattern of violations and crimes committed by the militia against journalists, especially in the Darfur region, where the number of journalists killed or abducted by the militia—whose fate remains unknown—has exceeded eight in the cities of El-Fashir, Nyala, and Al-Geneina since the beginning of the siege and attacks on the regional capital and other cities.
The union called for the immediate release of Muammar and the other journalists detained in the militia’s prisons, naming them as:
Mohamed Haroun Jarad – detained since July 2024
Mustafa Fadl Al-Mawla Abu Guta – detained since September 2025
Dr. Issam Haroun Jarad – detained since 2 October 2025
Yousif Al-Bashir Abdel-Malik – detained since 21 August 2024
The Sudanese Journalists Union stressed that there will be no impunity for the commanders of this militia or those who committed crimes against journalists, affirming that the journalistic and human rights campaign will continue to expose these crimes and reveal their true face as they target civilians and journalists alike.
