Shala Prison Evacuated as Hostages Transferred to Nyala

An official at the government of Darfur Region revealed on Monday that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia had evacuated Shala Prison, while detaining civilians in homes and other detention centres in Al-Fashir, and contacting their families to demand ransom for their release.

The Director of Media at the Darfur government, Abdel Aziz Ori, told Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath that large numbers of detainees have been transferred to Nyala, confirming that some prisoners have died due to the dire conditions inside RSF detention facilities.

The official emphasized that these actions constitute a serious violation of civilians’ rights and worsen the humanitarian crisis in the region, which has faced deteriorating security since the outbreak of the war between the Sudanese government forces and the RSF militia.
