Saudi Arabia and Egypt Urge Swift Launch of Comprehensive Political Process in Sudan
A phone call between the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Egypt addressed the humanitarian situation in Sudan. According to the conversation, both sides conditioned progress on the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from El-Fashir as a crucial step to protect civilians and ensure their safety.
The official spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated in a formal press release that the ministers discussed the deteriorating humanitarian and security conditions in Sudan. They reviewed efforts to support de-escalation and emphasized the importance of quickly reaching an urgent humanitarian truce, paving the way for a comprehensive ceasefire and the launch of a fully Sudanese-owned political process.
The statement said both Saudi and Egyptian ministers stressed the priority of establishing safe humanitarian corridors and zones for innocent civilians, particularly in light of the atrocities and massacres reported in El-Fashir, described as being committed by armed militias. The ministers underscored the urgent need for these forces to withdraw to ensure civilian safety.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aaty reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position in respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions, emphasizing Cairo’s rejection of any attempts to equate official state institutions with armed militias.
