Port Workers in Sudan Demand Salaries Paid in Foreign Currency

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Saif Al-Nasr Al-Tijani, met with a delegation from the Sea Ports Corporation Workers’ Union, headed by the union’s Secretary-General Mohamed Ali Mohamed Adam Sheiba, in the presence of several officials from the Corporation and the General Union of Port Workers.
The meeting addressed workers’ conditions, issues related to wages, allowances, and improving the work environment.
The union’s Secretary-General highlighted that the difficult economic conditions and the collapse of the national currency have directly affected workers’ lives. He pointed to the inadequacy of current salaries in covering basic needs and called for an increase in workers’ allowances, as well as considering the payment of salaries in foreign currency.
The trade union delegation emphasized the importance of developing the work environment and activating unions as oversight bodies that contribute to stable performance and increased productivity. They also stressed the need for external engagement and training of workers to keep pace with global developments in maritime transport and port operations.
The minister expressed his deep appreciation for the contributions of the Sea Ports Corporation’ workers, noting his strong connection to rural and labor communities and full understanding of their daily challenges. He affirmed his commitment to the concerns of rural communities and state employees, acknowledging that current salaries do not match living costs. He added that the ministry will work with relevant authorities to study the issue comprehensively and seek solutions to improve workers’ incomes.
He stressed that sea ports are a cornerstone of the national economy and that their development and the motivation of their workforce are top priorities. He affirmed his commitment to supporting the union and facilitating its role in defending workers’ rights and enhancing performance.
The minister reiterated that the ministry will continue to stand by its employees across all institutions, and that dialogue and cooperation with unions represent the best path to achieving justice, improving the work environment, and positively impacting performance and productivity.
