Nine killed in Floods in Ad-Damar, Northern Sudan

Nine people died in River Nile State due to the collapse of their homes after heavy seasonal rains turned into floods, bringing traffic to a standstill and yet besieging several neighborhoods in the city.

A Civil Defense source, who requested anonymity, said on Wednesday, “Nine people died as a result of the collapse of their homes in the city of Ad-Damar, on the River Nile State,” north of the capital, Khartoum. He added that “water still surrounds five neighborhoods in the city.”

Heavy rains fell in northern Sudan on Tuesday, some of which turned into floods that submerged parts of the road between Khartoum and Atbara in River Nile State.

Seasonal rains peak in August and are usually concentrated in the south and southeast of the country, but in recent years they have extended to the desert areas in the northern Sudan, all the way to the border with Egypt.

In Gedaref State, the government’s seasonal rain department reported that 600 homes were damaged, and approximately 8,500 acres of agricultural land were flooded.
