New Large-Capacity Fuel Depots Established in Port Sudan
Minister of Energy, Engineer Al-Moatassim Ibrahim Ahmed, inspected the completion of new strategic depots at Nile Petroleum Company, which are nearing operational readiness.
The visit took place during his field tour to the company’s headquarters in Port Sudan on Sunday.
The minister stated that the country is operating under exceptional circumstances that require expanding fuel storage capacities, particularly after the recent attacks that targeted petroleum facilities across Sudan, including storage depots.
He praised the efforts of Nile Petroleum Company staff for achieving this milestone entirely through Sudanese expertise — a project jointly implemented by the Sudanese Pipeline Company and Nile Petroleum.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to maintaining skilled personnel and providing a supportive work environment, despite the challenging conditions in which the sector operates.
For his part, Nile Petroleum Company Director General Dr. Hisham Taj Al-Sir said that four new depots — two for gasoline and two for diesel — have been constructed, each with a capacity of one million liters.
In addition, a fifth depot with a capacity of two million liters of water has been established for firefighting purposes, complete with a fire station and safety system.
He added that six horizontal gas tanks, each with a capacity of 100 tons, have been built, and work is underway to add four more, bringing the total capacity to 1,000 tons of gas.
These new additions, he noted, will provide multiple loading platforms to improve distribution flexibility.
The company expects total fuel storage capacity to reach 14 million liters in the near future, including an additional 10 million liters to be accommodated soon.
It is worth noting that Nile Petroleum previously lost four depots that were destroyed by drone strikes last May, in addition to other facilities that were damaged during the attacks.
