Militia causes devastating floods and fears of Jebel Awliya Dam collapse
Thousands of residents of the White Nile areas in Sudan were forced to flee after an unprecedented flood swept through their cities and villages, causing homes to sink and families to be displaced in a catastrophic scene that reflects the scale of the tragedy.
With the unprecedented rise in the levels of the White Nile, various villages and towns have become submerged under water, threatening the lives of residents at a difficult time, and in a tragedy that is worsening, in the absence of any effective solutions.
Social media sites in Sudan have documented, over the past hours, terrifying scenes of citizens being displaced from several areas on the banks of the White Nile, the latest of which was Al-JGezira Aba and the surrounding areas, after the devastating flood waters swept through large parts of it.
Local and international reports have warned of an imminent danger in the Jebel Awliya Dam that may cause it to collapse. Reports fear that the dam is no longer able to withstand the enormous pressure due to the ongoing floods. Reports confirmed that the risk of the dam collapsing not only threatens the White Nile area, but also threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens living on its banks.
For his part, former Irrigation Minister Osman Al-Tom revealed to Al-Arabiya Net a major crisis threatening control over the White Nile waters. He pointed out that the militia’s control over the dam led to a complete loss of control over the dam, and with the absence of engineers and technicians, it became impossible to open the dam gates to control water levels, which raise the probability of the risk of an uncontrolled flood. Although Al-Tom ruled out the risk of the dam collapsing, stressing the need to take back the control of the dam to the Ministry of Irrigation, confirming that its use as a military facility must stop immediately.
