Kordofan Militia Commander Flees to South Sudan

Multiple sources have reported that Taj al-Tijani, the prominent field commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Kordofan, has fled to South Sudan. Reports indicate that he was not alone; he was accompanied by ten local chiefs loyal to the militia from West Kordofan, in a move reflecting the collapse and fragmentation within the ranks of the rebel forces and their political and social strongholds following successive victories by the Sudanese army.

Journalist Khalid al-Tijani told sources that the fleeing commander and his entourage of local administration officials arrived in the South Sudanese town of Aweil, where they checked into a local hotel. Information indicates that their final destination is Uganda’s capital, Kampala. This mass exodus of militia leaders comes at a time when rebel forces are experiencing significant setbacks across the frontlines against advancing Sudanese Armed Forces.
