Sudanese Minister of Transport, Abu Bakr Abu Al-Gasim, has disclosed that Khartoum Airport is expected to resume its work within during a period not exceeding six months.
The minister confirmed that efforts are underway to rehabilitate the airport in preparation for the resumption of its vital operations.
During a press conference organized by the Sudan News Agency in Portsudan, the Minister of Transport underscored that the losses incurred by Khartoum Airport had not yet been accurately assessed up to this moment.
He noted that work is ongoing to comprehensively assess the damage and develop a well-thought-out plan to restore the airport, which is a strategic artery for the country.
In another step within the recovery plan, Abu Al-Gasim announced the government’s efforts to resume the Portsudan-Khartoum train next week, after months of suspension. He emphasized that railway transport represents a strategic option for transporting goods and passengers, contributing to revitalizing trade and connecting regions.
The Minister indicated that the top priority currently is to create a suitable environment for the return of Sudanese from asylum, displacement, shelters, and camps.
He explained that the government is keen to implement a gradual process of construction and reconstruction in accordance with a comprehensive vision that ensures stability and development. The Minister of Transport stressed that the return does not simply mean resuming services, but must be conducted according to a well-thought-out approach and a comprehensive strategic vision that takes into account the needs of citizens in all states and the development opportunities upon which future projects can be built.
