Intensive moves to lift Sudan’s AU membership suspension

A Sudanese diplomatic source disclosed intensive government moves during the 46th African Summit, currently being held in the Ethiopian capital, to lift the suspension on Sudan’s membership in the continental union.
The African Union (AU) decided to suspend Sudan’s membership on October 27, 2021.
The diplomatic source told “Sudan Tribune”, on the fringes of the African Summit in Addis Ababa, that diplomats in the Sudanese government held side meetings with a number of African officials to discuss the frozen membership file. For the fourth year in a row, Sudan has been absent from participating in the African Summit due to the suspension of its membership in the continental union.
Sudanese diplomats held side meetings with a number of African officials outside the main halls at the union’s headquarters.
The source reported that there were assurances from the Sudanese government to appoint a prime minister before the end of this February, and to transfer power to a civilian government to implement the African conditions and charters to lift the suspension.
On February 14, the African Union Peace and Security Council will hold a special session on developments in Sudan, on the sidelines of the summit.
On the same day, a high-level conference to support humanitarian issues in Sudan will be held in the capital, Addis Ababa.
