Hemeidti’s Militia Kidnaps Doctors in El-Fashir, Demands Over $250,000 in Ransom
Sudan Doctors Network said on Tuesday that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia abducted six medical personnel in the city of El-Fashir, capital of North Darfur State, and demanded that their families pay a ransom exceeding USD 250,000 for their release.
The incident comes days after the militia seized control of El-Fashir following the withdrawal of the Sudanese army and its allies, which led to a wave of widespread abuses against civilians, including killings and lootings on an ethnic basis, according to UN and human rights reports.
In a statement, Sudan Doctors Network reported that “a force belonging to the militia arrested four doctors, a pharmacist and a nurse who were providing medical services to the wounded and sick during the siege imposed by the forces on the city of El-Fashir.”
It added that the kidnappers demanded a ransom of about 100 million Sudanese pounds for each doctor — equivalent to roughly USD 42,000 according to the official exchange rate.
