Foreign Minister Reveals Sudan’s Suspension from AU Is Close to Lifting

Youssef told the Al-Mohaqiq news website, “This decision expresses Africa’s support for an African country facing serious challenges.” He added that it is a correct, clear, and specific position, and includes evidence indicating the African Union’s rejection of the division of Sudan and the infringement of its sovereignty. He expressed his welcome to the decision, saying “it is a serious and important step and the penultimate step toward lifting Sudan’s suspension from the African Union (AU).

Regarding Sudan’s return to IGAD, the Foreign Minister said that Sudan was the one that left IGAD and asked the organization to apologize for what happened at its meeting on Sudan before leaving the organization. He explained that the apology came in a letter from the President of Djibouti, Chairman of IGAD. He said, “Therefore, we decided to return to the organization.” He explained that he would visit Addis Ababa in the coming days to congratulate the new Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Yusuf.
