Ethiopia Accused of Waging ‘Proxy War’ in Sudan on Behalf of the UAE
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday disclosed details of drone attacks launched by Ethiopia against numerous Sudanese facilities and installations, affirming Sudan’s right to respond to any act of aggression. The Ministry also briefed international diplomatic missions accredited to Sudan on these attacks.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry provided diplomatic missions accredited to Sudan with a briefing on drone attacks launched from Ethiopian territory and targeting Sudan’s security, stability, territorial integrity and the lives of its citizens, according to the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).
Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, said that “these attacks, which have intensified in recent months, targeted the country’s infrastructure and vital facilities, particularly electricity generation facilities, water stations, schools, hospitals and fuel stations, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries.”
The Sudanese official described the attacks as “aggression against Sudan,” saying they were part of a “proxy war” being waged by Ethiopia on behalf of regional parties and countries, foremost among them the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He also pointed to the use of the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia as an instrument of this aggression.
He noted that the Assosa base inside Ethiopian territory had become a hub for supplying the rebel militia with weapons and military equipment and facilitating the passage of foreign fighters and mercenaries participating in the war against Sudan. He stressed that the most serious development was the use of Ethiopian bases and territory as launching points for drone attacks against the country, according to SUNA.
The Sudanese official added that the Sudanese government was making efforts to de-escalate tensions and address existing problems in Sudanese-Ethiopian relations through various diplomatic channels, while retaining Sudan’s full right to respond to any aggression in accordance with the rights afforded under international law to states subjected to attack.
