Egypt to Send Team to Develop Sudan’s Key Ports

The Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, announced that Egypt will participate in modernizing Sudanese port infrastructure.

Speaking to the Russian news agency Novosti, Rabie said a specialized Egyptian team will visit Sudan in the first half of December to develop a plan for upgrading port facilities and training personnel.

He noted that the matter was discussed two weeks ago with the Director-General of the Sudan Ports Corporation Gailani Mohamed Gailani.

Earlier, on 9 August, Turkey’s Ambassador to Sudan, Fateh Yildiz, stated that he had discussed with Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) Member Nawara Abu Mohamed Turkey’s contribution to Khartoum’s efforts to promote economic and social development. He explained that Turkey is currently operating from Port Sudan, focusing on maritime port development and reconstruction projects, and reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to enhance cooperation with Sudan by attracting investors and capital to support industrial and developmental initiatives benefiting Sudanese communities.

Sudanese ports are crucial not only for exporting natural resources and agricultural products but also for the economies of many neighbouring African countries without direct access to the Red Sea. However, cargo transport has sharply declined due to ongoing instability amid the country’s persistent conflict.
