“Dark Irony”: Empowerment Removal Committee Moves to Operate from Exile
Former Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) and a leading figure in the civil coalition “Sumoud,” Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman, revealed plans to establish offices for the Empowerment Removal Committee both inside and outside Sudan, following a decision to resume its activities as of Tuesday.
The committee had been suspended by the TSC President, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, as part of measures taken after the October 2021 military takeover.
Al-Faki dismissed the suspension, stating: “We do not recognize the freeze decision, nor the authority that issued it.” He added that the committee will operate across multiple locations while taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of its members domestically and abroad.
He acknowledged that operational mechanisms will differ due to wartime conditions, noting that the current environment is fundamentally different from the transitional period. Nevertheless, he affirmed that most members have expressed full readiness to resume work under all circumstances.
Following the suspension, assets and properties previously confiscated from figures linked to the dissolved National Congress Party were returned, alongside the restoration of companies’ holdings and the unfreezing of bank accounts, based on rulings issued by the Supreme Court.
Earlier on Tuesday, committee leaders formally announced the resumption of activities after a leadership meeting, which also endorsed Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman as chairman, having previously served as deputy head prior to the suspension.
