Cairo Demands Ethiopia Compensate Sudan and Egypt for Damages from the Renaissance Dam
Egyptian Minister of Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, stated that Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam has caused significant harm to both Egypt and Sudan, emphasizing that Ethiopia must be held accountable and compensation should be sought at some point.
Minister Sewilam made these remarks during the Sunday plenary session of the Senate, held to discuss a request submitted by MP Emad Khalil for a general discussion on clarifying the government’s policy in facing challenges resulting from climate change, including rising sea levels and their impact on Egypt’s coasts and beaches. The session also addressed mechanisms for flood management through the High Dam system.
Meanwhile, MP Mahmoud Salah submitted a request for a general discussion on the increasing spread of water hyacinth in waterways, irrigation canals, and drains, highlighting the threat it poses to the efficiency of Egypt’s irrigation system, Egypt’s water share, public health, and the environment.
