AU-PSC Directs “Decisive Blow” to Janjaweed Government, Blesses “Government of Hope”
The African Union Peace and Security Council (AU-PSC) held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss developments in Sudan. The Council reaffirmed its support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while rejecting the formation of a parallel government.
The session was chaired by Algeria’s representative and Chair of the Council for August, Ambassador Mohamed Khalid.
In a statement following the meeting, the AU-PSC condemned the escalation of military action and foreign interference, reiterating its rejection of the so-called parallel government, considering it a direct threat to the political process in the country.
The AU-PSC called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged the Sudanese parties to engage in an inclusive Sudanese-led political dialogue that would pave the way for the restoration of constitutional order.
The AU-PSC emphasized that the only way to end the crisis is through an inclusive Sudanese-led political process, noting that the absence of a political solution will perpetuate the suffering of civilians.
A diplomatic source at the African Union told Sudan Tribune that the emergency meeting of the Peace and Security Council did not discuss lifting Sudan’s suspension from the African Union. The diplomat explained that the escalating situation and the current complications, particularly in the humanitarian field, were the focus of the discussion.
Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, addressed the meeting held by the Peace and Security Council during the informal consultative session that preceded the official session on Sudan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in a statement, that Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim provided an explanation of the developments in the humanitarian, security, and political situation in Sudan, including the formation of the Government of Hope led by Prime Minister Kamil Idris, as an important step in implementing the roadmap announced by President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, last February.
Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim called on the AU-PSC to lift the suspension of Sudan’s participation in African Union activities after the announcement of the roadmap and the completion of the formation of the civilian government, based on the African Solidarity Initiative, with the aim of supporting Sudan in achieving comprehensive peace and reconstruction.
The Sudanese diplomat urged the African Peace and Security Council to pressure the militias to lift the siege they are imposing on El-Fashir, withdraw from civilian areas, and cease their violations against civilians in Kordofan and Darfur. He also called on the council to urge neighboring countries not to facilitate the passage of support for the RSF militias and to prevent their personnel from passing through their airports and territories.
