AU Intends to Lift Suspension of Sudan’s Membership Amid Regional Pressures

Well-informed sources within the African Union (AU) have revealed a strong tendency inside the AU Peace and Security Council to lift the suspension of Sudan’s participation in the Union’s activities – imposed following the October 2021 coup – in light of recent political developments in the country.

According to the sources, this move comes as part of efforts to support Sudan’s stability and strengthen its regional role, with several member states believing that Sudan’s return to AU activities would contribute to enhancing political dialogue and supporting internal peace processes.

The sources indicated that intensive discussions had taken place in recent weeks within the Council, with major states expressing support for this step.

On the other hand, the sources disclosed that certain regional powers are exerting pressure to block the decision, aiming to maintain the status quo amid concerns that Sudan’s return could affect regional balance dynamics.

The sources did not disclose the identity of these actors but confirmed that divisions over the Sudan file could hinder a final decision during the upcoming meetings, according to Al-Sudani newspaper.

The African Union had suspended Sudan’s membership following the October 2021 coup, demanding the restoration of constitutional order as a condition for resuming participation.

Decisive sessions on the matter are expected to be held in Addis Ababa in the coming weeks, amid anticipation of how these regional pressures might influence the AU Peace and Security Council’s decision.
