Arrests Campaign in Libya Targets Sudanese Refugees, Including Women and Children
Libya – Sudanese Echoes
Several Sudanese refugees in Libya have expressed deep concern over a wave of arrests targeting hundreds of them this week across multiple Libyan cities, carried out by local authorities.
Mohamed Mohy-Eddin, a Sudanese refugee in the municipality of Sabratha in western Libya, told Darfur24 that police raided homes early on Sunday morning, arresting dozens of Sudanese families.
He noted that the arrests followed popular protests against the presence of foreigners in general, which had severe repercussions for Sudanese residents. Mohy-Eddin added that dozens of children were detained along with their families in Sabratha, and transferred to inhumane detention facilities, facing extremely difficult humanitarian and security conditions.
He called on international and human rights organizations to intervene urgently to find lasting solutions for Sudanese refugees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
In a brief statement on its official Facebook page, the Libyan Ministry of Interior said that the field committee of the Joint Security Chamber in the Sabratha Security Directorate carried out a wide-ranging operation on Sunday morning targeting several locations across the city.
