Army Hands Over Recovered Antiquities to Museums and Antiquities Authority

The Engineering Corps of the Sudanese Armed Forces has handed over a number of recovered archaeological artifacts and treasures to the Museums and Antiquities Administration, after they were retrieved during security operations in Omdurman.

The handover ceremony took place at the Engineering Corps headquarters, attended by the Commander of the Omdurman Military Area and Commander of the Engineering Corps Major General Dhafir Omar Abdel-Gadir, along with representatives from the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism, the Museums and Antiquities Directorate, and several military unit commanders.

Officials stated that the recovered items include rare antiquities representing part of Sudan’s historical heritage, explaining that they were seized during internal security operations and patrols conducted by forces of the Omdurman Military Zone and the Engineering Corps.

The recovery comes amid repeated accusations that archaeological sites and artifacts in Sudan have been looted during the war that erupted in April 2023.

In January, the Sudanese government announced the recovery of 570 looted artifacts.
