Algeria Calls for African-Led Solutions to Sudan War, Warns Against External Interference
Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf stated today that the war in Sudan, now approaching its third year, has resulted in one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the world. Speaking at the 12th session of the “Oran Track” on Peace and Security in Africa at the International Conference Center in Algiers, Attaf noted that the ongoing conflict has caused immense suffering for the Sudanese people, with no clear signs of a political solution capable of ending the crisis or ensuring security and stability.
He added that the situation in Sudan reflects a decline in international attention to peace and security issues in Africa, which compounds the challenges facing African countries in addressing internal conflicts.
Attaf pointed out that the lack of effective African-led initiatives to tackle the crisis has allowed external interventions to increase, further complicating the prospects for a peaceful resolution. He emphasized the importance of strengthening African diplomatic efforts, asserting that sustainable solutions to crises such as the Sudanese one must originate within the continent itself, with international support provided as needed to ensure their effective implementation.
He stressed that an African approach based on proactive initiative and direct participation in mediation could help reduce conflict escalation, restore security and stability in Sudan, alleviate civilian suffering, and promote peace across the region.
