Al-Dinder Flood Submerges Villages, Destroys Farms, and Inflicts Heavy Losses on Farmers
Al-Dinder: Al- Taj Osman
The flooding of Al-Dinder River has submerged 35 agricultural projects, with farmers’ losses exceeding 1.6 billion Sudanese pounds. Hundreds of animal resources also drowned in the disaster.
Eyewitnesses from Al-Bardana, Nur Al-Jaleel, Om Damour, Al-Azaza, Om Ardeeb, and dozens of other villages on the river’s eastern bank told Sudanese Echoes that the eastern villages remained underwater and completely cut off from the rest of Al-Dinder Locality until Saturday. The floodwaters surrounded the entire area.
A field visit by the newspaper revealed the collapse of the strategic Wad Al-Hassan bridge, halting the movement of agricultural machinery, goods, and animal resources, as well as the export of produce from the region’s farms.
An engineering source attributed the repeated cracks and collapse of Wad Al-Hassan bridge to design flaws, noting that the current failure occurred despite renovation work carried out by state authorities last May.
Residents of the affected villages have called on the Wali (governor) of Sennar State to order a transparent investigation into the reasons behind the bridge’s collapse.
