After Nationwide Blackout… Electricity Begins to Return in Sudan

Electricity has returned to the states of River Nile, Red Sea, and Northern Sudan following a total nationwide blackout earlier Monday. Sources reported that maintenance and the installation of a transformer at the Merowe Dam station have been completed, noting that power will gradually be restored to other states. It is worth mentioning that Northern Sudan had been experiencing a prolonged blackout for more than a month.

Sudan witnessed a near-complete power outage today due to a sudden malfunction at the main Merowe Dam station, according to local media. The failure led to most states losing electricity, in what has been described as one of the largest disruptions affecting the national grid in recent times.

The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company explained that “a technical attempt to install a new transformer in the Northern State caused a nationwide blackout.” It added that maintenance teams and engineers are currently working to resolve the fault and gradually restart the network. The company confirmed that electricity will be restored in the coming hours, with priority given to the most affected states.
