Al-Bashir’s Lawyer: Authorities Give Preliminary Approval for His Treatment Abroad
Mohamed Al-Hassan Al-Amin, a member of the defense team for former Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, said Wednesday that the military authorities have given preliminary approval for Al-Bashir to travel outside Sudan for medical treatment, but the decision has not yet been implemented.
In September 2024, the military authorities transferred Al-Bashir, his first vice-president Bakri Hassan Saleh, former Defense Minister Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein, and Brigadier (Rtd) General Yousuf Abdel-Fattah from the Wadi Sayidna military area in Omdurman to Merowe Hospital in Northern State, following medical reports confirming the deterioration of their health.
In April 2025, the authorities decided to release Bakri Hassan Saleh and Yousuf Abdel-Fattah due to the deterioration of their health.
Al-Amin told Sudan Tribune that “Field Marshal Al-Bashir is not currently in critical condition, but he has symptoms that require examinations and procedures unavailable in Sudan. Therefore, he requested the authorities’ approval to travel for treatment. Preliminary approval was granted, but this has not yet been implemented.”
He added that Al-Bashir remains in preventive detention and that his release and permission to travel are subject to the approval of the political and military leadership. He affirmed that the defense team continues to call on the authorities to release him and allow him to travel for treatment.
Al-Amin noted that Al-Bashir was previously transferred from Merowe in Northern State to Khartoum while under preventive detention, and that follow-up examinations and treatment are now being conducted at Aliaa Hospital instead of Merowe Hospital, which revealed his presence at Aliaa Hospital.
