Hundreds of South Sudanese Fighters Arrive in Nyala to Join RSF Militia

Local residents and multiple sources have reported that hundreds of foreign fighters arrived in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, during June and July to join the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

Witnesses told Darfur24 that the fighters, who are from South Sudan, are being housed in sections of government buildings and in neighborhoods in the southern part of the city.

Darfur24 also reported seeing a number of foreign nationals wearing RSF uniforms and maintaining a visible presence in Nyala’s markets.

In the same context, three independent sources, including a military source within the RSF, told Darfur24 that the fighters entered Sudan through the Heglig area and the Al-Na’am border crossing before receiving financial incentives in U.S. dollars upon their arrival in East Darfur State.

One source said the fighters’ demand to exchange U.S. dollars for Sudanese pounds triggered a severe cash shortage during June, the effects of which are still being felt. According to the source, traders purchased the dollars from the fighters at an exchange rate of SDG 3,500 per U.S. dollar.
