United Nations: Residents of El-Fashir Live in Humiliating and Unsafe Conditions

The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown, warned on Monday, following her return from El-Fashir in western Sudan, about the “shock” experienced by residents living in “humiliating and unsafe conditions.”

A mission from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) managed to enter El-Fashir on Friday for the first time in two months after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the city, following “arduous negotiations,” Brown said in a video interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Brown stated, “These people are living in extremely precarious conditions… some are staying in abandoned buildings, while others… in primitive conditions with plastic sheets, without sanitation or access to water. These are humiliating and unsafe conditions for people.”

Earlier, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, told Al Arabiya/Al Hadath that civilians in El-Fashir had “fled sexual violence and attacks.”

The UN official also emphasized that women have been used as tools of war in Sudan, warning that the humanitarian situation could worsen if attacks on civilians continue unabated.
