Iran Declares Sudanese Diplomat ‘Persona Non Grata’
Iranian authorities have informed a Sudanese diplomat at the Sudanese Embassy in Tehran that he is persona non grata and must leave the country within 72 hours. The move reflects an unannounced tension in relations between the two countries, although the true motives behind the decision remain unclear.
Sources told Sudanese Echoes that the Sudanese government is expected to respond similarly by expelling an Iranian diplomat from Khartoum, in line with the principle of reciprocity. According to the sources, the Sudanese government has consistently refused to yield to any Iranian pressure regarding its foreign policy or national sovereignty.
This development follows Sudan’s recent agreement to downgrade its diplomatic ties with Iran at the request of the United States, after a meeting between President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan and Massad Boulos, U.S. President’s adviser for Africa and the Arab world, in Nyon, Switzerland.
