Serious Leak: Senior Figures in Hamdok’s Coalition Secretly Apply for Political Asylum in Europe

Around 42 senior figures from the “Sumoud” coalition, led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, have reportedly submitted secret applications for political asylum in several European countries — a move described as both confidential and unexpected.
According to journalist Abdel-Majid Abdel-Hamid, who is known for his Islamist leanings, the asylum applications included attempts to obtain official documentation that would allow the applicants to receive a so-called “Future Refugee Card” — a document typically issued to individuals recognized as political refugees by EU member states.
Abdel-Hamid claimed that the list includes prominent political figures such as Siddig Al-Mahdi, Secretary-General of the Sumoud coalition, and Mohamed Al-Faki Suleiman, former member of the Sovereignty Council and leading figure in the Unionist Gathering.
The list also reportedly includes relatives and associates of politicians who have lived abroad for years, even before the current conflict began — suggesting that their motives for seeking asylum may vary between escaping potential legal action and securing long-term legal residency abroad.
Meanwhile, activist and journalist Bashir Yagoub sharply criticized the move, describing it as a “tragic flight” that exposes what he called the political elite’s intellectual alienation from Sudan’s realities. He said these elites had falsely claimed to speak on behalf of the Sudanese people under the guise of a revolutionary legitimacy that has now proven to be an illusion, as the ongoing war revealed their failure to govern state institutions.
Yagoub added that this group had long subordinated Sudan’s national decisions to foreign agendas, and that their current attempt to obtain political asylum reflects their detachment from the country’s core issues.
