22 killed, injured in tragic fire in IDP camp in Al-Obied

A massive fire broke out on Saturday in a shelter for displaced people (IDP) at the new Dry port in Al-Obeid, killing two women and two children and injuring 21 others.

According to sources spoke to (Al-Taghyeer), the fire broke out when a displaced woman lit a fire to prepare breakfast, which led to the rapid spread of the flames inside the straw houses, causing significant human and material losses, amid difficult humanitarian conditions.

Thousands of IDP in Al-Obeid live in shelters that lack safety requirements.

The IDP rely on primitive materials to build their homes, which makes them vulnerable to fires, particularly in light of the absence of basic services.

Fire incidents have been repeated in IDP camps, as a result of the use of primitive means of cooking and lighting, due to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions and the lack of relief aid.
