(14,012) Dengue Cases in Khartoum Since January 2024, with (4) Deaths

The Ministry of Health of Khartoum State has reported 14,012 cases of dengue fever among citizens since January 2024, with 4 deaths as of yesterday.

Through its daily platform for reporting epidemics, the ministry presented the epidemiological situation of dengue fever across all seven localities of the state, including statistics, figures, and the ministry’s preventive and therapeutic efforts.

The ministry emphasized that 90% of dengue elimination depends on community involvement within homes and neighborhoods and warned against taking paracetamol (Panadol) without a doctor’s prescription.

The Director of Therapeutic Medicine in Khartoum, Ahmed Al-Bashir, outlined the ministry’s efforts to prevent epidemics caused by the war, which hindered preventive measures, and by conditions created in closed houses and tires scattered in the streets, which serve as breeding sites for dengue-transmitting mosquitoes. He revealed that 980 fogging operations and 10 aerial spraying missions were conducted in areas difficult to access, in addition to indoor fogging.

He stressed the importance of community participation in combating dengue vectors, noting that Saturdays and Tuesdays of each week are designated for drying homes to eliminate mosquito eggs and larvae, thereby preventing dengue outbreaks in the community.

The Director of Emergency, Epidemic Control, and Preventive Medicine, Mohamed Al-Tijani, provided an overview of the epidemiological situation of dengue fever since the first confirmed cases on September 20, 2023, in Karari locality up to yesterday. He reported that 264 new cases were recorded yesterday, bringing the cumulative total to 14,012 cases with 4 deaths. He also highlighted that treatment is available free of charge at hospitals designated as dengue treatment centers, noting that not all cases require paracetamol treatment, which should be determined by the treating physician.

According to the epidemiological report for the seven state localities, Karari recorded 7,245 cases, making it the most densely populated locality since the outbreak of the war, followed by Jebel Awlia with 1,702 cases, Omdurman 1,676, East Nile 1,241, Bahri 1,019, and Khartoum 809 cases.

These statistics cover the period from January 2025 to yesterday.
