14,000 Transformers Needed in Khartoum to Restore Electricity

The Supreme Committee for Preparing the Environment for Citizens’ Return to Khartoum State announced that the electricity sector requires around 14,000 new transformers to meet the state’s needs and restore services after extensive war devastation.

At a Sunday press conference, the committee estimated losses in the electricity sector at approximately $468 million, noting that the sabotage was carried out in a “systematic and professional” manner, exacerbating the damage.

The committee urged citizens to remove illegal connections, locally known as “Jibadat,” which cause frequent outages and increase maintenance costs, stressing the importance of purchasing electricity through official channels.

While acknowledging that current tariffs are low and the prepaid system does not cover actual costs, the committee confirmed that maintenance and rehabilitation efforts rely on national expertise.

Priority is currently given to hydroelectric generation to reduce costs amid difficult economic conditions, with citizens’ resilience and determination playing a key role in restoring numerous vandalized towers and stations.
